HELLO, I'M
JAN FARQUHAR
Learning Experience Designer
I design online experiences that help people become more capable, confident, and connected – even wiser and kinder.

INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN
Effective solutions for every learning challenge
Jan works to ensure she understands your business needs and goals, your learners' motivation, and their learning goals. She then applies knowledge of cognitive sciences to help you prioritize, organize, and sequence your content for maximum impact. Next, she'll design creative strategies to take your learners from "What's in this for me?" to multiple "Aha!" moments that elicit changes in thinking and behavior.
SCRIPTWRITING
Crisp, clear writing for any audience in any medium
Whether it's live-action video, animation, motion graphic pieces, gamified experiences, branching scenarios, character dialogue, interactive infographics, or a good-ole-fashioned paragraph, Jan will engage your learners with stories, examples, analogies, images, and practice opportunities that are as memorable as they are engaging.
CONSULTING
Consultation and guidance for teams seeking a successful path forward
Unsure about the best approach for your project? Jan leads teams through creative, structured design planning to identify a customized solution. Together, you'll identify core criteria and project goals, imagine ideal outcomes, and ideate effective learning strategies. By the end of your time together you’ll have a specific destination and a clear plan to get there.
PROJECTS
Scenario-based ✦ Microlearning ✦ Blended
Check out some of Jan's strategies and designs that developers have brought to life.
PERSONALIZATION AND GAMIFICATION
Using avatars, a user's name or other personalizations adds a level of engagement.
Awarding players with upgrades to their avatar's appearance or skills creates an incentive to continue gameplay.
CRITICAL THINKING AND DECISION MAKING
Active decision-making promotes critical thinking and makes learning challenging, interesting, and memorable.Â
Scenario-driven plot points allow learners to make choices and experience outcomes.
COMMERCIALS AND TRAILERS
Marketing communication strategies share many requirements of quality instruction from attention-grabbing to creating memorable experiences.
Co-Production House needed a fresh and intriguing way to show off its unique capabilities. Jan collaborated with the team to create this short powerful piece to depict the studio's ability to produce virtually anything, anywhere.

VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS
Virtual environments provide learners a safe place to practice and advance their skills. In this virtual hospital, each room opens a door to an emotional and challenging scene of a patient and family needing care. As the narrative arc for each patient unfolds across the modules, tension increases and heightens the learning experience which, in turn, increases likelihood of recall and real-world application.
BRANCHING SCENARIOS
Learners appreciate a sense of control. And we like to give it to them. In this example, interactive video allows Court Appointed Child Advocates in-training to select characters they want to interview, then the questions they want to ask. They take notes on the character responses in preparation for writing a recommendation to the court.
CREATIVE STORYTELLING
Are your learners weary of standard training approaches? Let's brainstorm creative concepts that the spark the interest of even your most cynical employee. We worked with subject matter experts, illustrators, animators, and sound engineers to create this interactive graphic novel.
BELIEVABLE CHARACTERS
When we contextualize learning in stories, we ensure characters are relatable (even flawed) that learners care about. This fresh and effective approach earned recognition in the Chief Security Officer CSO50 awards.
MEDIA VARIETY
This award-winning project allowed us to flex our creative muscles to develop hours of short media pieces. Directors of a global workshop for leaders needed us to demonstrate skills and scenarios that would prompt discussion. The variety of topics and stories led us to use of a plethora of media including live-action video, motion-graphics, and blended media.
